Colonial Salt Box
Modeled after an historic east coast home, this home and landscape offer a return to our roots and a simplistic approach to the overall garden design. While many modern amenities are included in this project, the design approach was to stay true to the historic character of the home. This was done through natural material selections and the simple and clean planting design.
Situated on a wooded lot overlooking Lake Michigan, the back yard offers spectacular vistas of the horizon and stunning sunset views. Clay bricks and monolithic stone slabs create the walkways and patios while a rustic cedar pergola offers a shady retreat on warm afternoons. Simple Boxwood hedges and masses of Hydrangeas frame the rear yard while carpets of Pachysandra and Liriope ground cover surround the home. Many plants from the original garden, originally located around the pool and backyard were saved and transplanted to the front woodland garden. Here, native wildflowers were added to create a shady carpet of colors and textures and provide a private, park like feel to the front landscape. These lush gardens, combined with the stunning lake views, truly make this project one for the history books!
